AOC, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

On Saturday, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez opened up and let loose a whole bunch of words.

And boy, were they something.

Speaking with Bernie Sanders at Iowa’s “Climate Crisis” summit, she positioned Donald Trump as a disease, against which the nation must vaccinate itself.

I can’t help but wonder if she’s forgotten — as some others seem to have — that it was the nation that elected him.

And in case you’re wondering, the way to save the planet — and the world — is to inject ourselves against capitalism. And let the government take over clothing everyone, educating everyone (in what?), and fighting the apparent pandemic of the KKK.

Does she know what white supremacy is? She waxes on it a lot — as she does capitalism. But has she stopped off on her race to forcible Utopia to peruse the dictionary aisle of a Barnes & Noble? Or, in the case of Aryan racism, a history book?

On the surface, we look to have moved beyond 1940’s Berlin and 1920’s Mississippi. Where are all the millions of hiding hoods?

It seems to me that if we can’t even agree on our problems, there’s no chance of jointly addressing them.

But Alexandria’s got her own checklist and, to me, she appears at times to approach issues as if she’s doing improvisational comedy — just commit to whatever idea pops up, and go with it.

This is her:

“The reason we are in this crisis is because oil and gas has been one of the most profitable industries of the modern era. And when we talk about fighting money in politics, what we’re talking about is fighting big oil. We’re talking about fighting Wall Street. We’re talking about fighting big pharma.”

Speaking of pharmaceuticals, we’ve got a disease:

“Trump is a symptom. He is a symptom of much deeper problems.”

This thing that happened — that would be, the 2016 election…we have to figure out how to prevent its insanity from ever again afflicting us:

“Here’s the thing, is that we can beat him but we have to vaccinate ourselves against something like this ever happening again. And the way we inoculate ourselves — the way we inoculate ourselves from late-stage hyper-capitalistic concentration of wealth among the very, very few is with a labor movement.”

When it comes to lawmaking to fight scientific global warming, Alexandria’s good with turning to “indigenous wisdom”:

“The way we inoculate ourselves from continuing to burn up our planet at an unsustainable level triggering feedback loops that we have not even begun to comprehend is by honoring indigenous wisdom and allowing it to guide our climate policy.”

If we haven’t begun to comprehend them, how does she know they exist?

And how ’bout the indigenous wisdom of not taking a jet across the continent to fight global warming when there’s Facetime?

Anyway, back to fighting and preventing the evil nudity of capitalism:

“The way, the way that we preserve our systems is by transitioning to principles of universality. That means I want you clothed, I want you educated, I want you paid a living wage — no ifs, ands, or buts. And what that also means at what [anti-capitalism activist Naomi Klein] talked about as well is directly, consciously, combating white supremacy in the United States of America.”

She wants you. Mama government.

“Principles of universality” = socialism and communism.

And again, I ask: Where are all the plague-making white supremacists?

Like others in politics, she’s got a grand scheme and galactic foes; I suppose I’m just one of simpler hopes. Instead of our elected officials flying across the country to fight cryptic foes and unproven futures, I’d be pretty stoked if they kept murderers in prison, filled the pot holes, and balanced the budget.

At least, can we start with that? And maybe get the schools churning out masters of reading, writing, and arithmetic?

How’s that for indigenous wisdom?

What are your priorities for America? What are the things you’d like to see addressed first and foremost? I look forward to learning about them in the Comments section.
